Before You Start
Sonotubes
Keep them dry.
Cardboard tube forms (Sonotubes) lose strength if they get wet before pouring. Store them off the ground and covered.

Bracing is Critical
They wobble.
A tall tube is unstable. Build a strong 2x4 collar at the top and brace it to stakes in the ground in 3 or 4 directions so it stays perfectly plumb.

Filling
Don't drop too far.
If pouring a very tall column, try not to drop concrete 10 feet down—it separates the rocks from the cement. Use a chute or tremie pipe if possible.

Finishing the Top
Screed flush.
Strike off the top of the tube with a board. If you need to insert a metal bracket (post base) for a deck, double-check your layout measurements and push it into the wet concrete now.
