Before You Start

Check Codes

Rise/Run rules.

Stair codes are strict (usually 7.75" max rise, 10" min run). If your steps are uneven sizes, it's a major trip hazard and code violation.

During the Pour

Low Slump Mix

Dry mix.

Order concrete at a '3 or 4 inch slump' (stiff). If it's too wet (soup), it will flow out from under the bottom step form when you pour the top steps.

After the Pour

Face Forms

Strip early to finish.

You have to remove the front riser boards while the concrete is still a bit soft so you can trowel the face of the steps smooth. This is a timing art form.
