Is this harder than a slab?

Yes, much harder.

Walls require complex formwork that must withstand immense pressure. If a form blows out, you lose all your concrete. This is an advanced DIY project.

Before You Start

The Footing First

Walls need a base.

You cannot pour a wall directly on dirt. It must sit on a cured concrete footing with rebar sticking up (dowels) to tie the two together.

Snap Ties

Hold forms together.

You need 'snap ties' and 'wedges' to hold the two sides of your plywood forms together. 2x4 bracing on the outside is not enough.

During the Pour

Vibration is Key

Remove air pockets.

You must use a pencil vibrator. Insert it every 18 inches to settle the concrete. Without this, you will have 'honeycombing' (large holes) when you strip the forms.

Pour in Lifts

Don't fill to top instantly.

Pour about 2-3 feet deep all the way around, then vibrate. Then do the next 2-3 feet. This prevents the pressure from bursting the bottom of the forms.

After the Pour

Stripping Forms

Wait 24-48 hours.

Carefully remove the forms. Snap off the protruding ties. If there are small honeycombs, patch them immediately with a parging mix while the concrete is 'green'.
