Why Footings Matter
They support everything.
The footing spreads the weight of the building onto the soil. If the footing fails or sinks, the whole structure cracks.
basics
Before You Start
Check Frost Depth
Ask building dept.
The bottom of the footing MUST be below the frost line (often 30-48 inches deep in cold climates) or the ground will freeze and heave the building up.

Level Trenches
Flat bottom.
The trench bottom must be undisturbed soil and perfectly level. Don't dig too deep and try to fill it back with loose dirt.

During the Pour
Rebar Chairs
Lift the steel.
Throwing rebar in the trench isn't enough. It must be suspended 3 inches off the dirt using 'dobies' or plastic chairs so the concrete encases it completely.

After the Pour
Insert Dowels
Connect to wall.
While the concrete is wet, insert vertical rebar pieces (dowels) that will stick up into the future wall or column. Use a string line to keep them perfectly aligned.
